Newsletter Room 9 January 22 – January 24 2020
Although this was a shortened week in Room 9, we were so happy to welcome everyone back to class after so many absences last week. The children continue to wash their hands as soon as they come in and are aware to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. As soon as Preston walked in on Wednesday, he looked at the wall and exclaimed, “What holiday is coming up?” He noticed that there were new books and pictures on the wall signaling a new holiday. It was an astute observation and we were excited that he was so aware of his surroundings. During our group discussion, we talked about American vs. Jewish holidays. Martin Luther King, Jr. day is an American holiday observed throughout the United States as is Independence Day and Thanksgiving, and other holidays as well. Tu B’Shevat, the holiday we will be celebrating soon, is a Jewish holiday, celebrated by Jewish people all around the world, just like other Jewish holidays such as Hanukkah and Passover. Tu B’Shevat, the fifteenth day of Shevat, is the new year or birthday of the trees. The Torah commands us to celebrate the trees. We asked the class: Do you know what commandment means? Evan said, “It means you have to do it.” As soon as we began talking about Tu B’Shevat, the new year of the Trees, the children started excitedly talking about trees. Jacob said, “They give us air.” Evan said, “They give us food.” Preston said, “Apples!” Kayla said, “lemons and limes.” We will continue to delve deeper into this most important holiday. On Tuesday, the teachers were so fortunate to be able to attend a Professional Development workshop. Being your partners in raising your child we would like to share some wonderful quotes: “Young people are powerful, active, competent protagonists of their own growth.” “The role of the adult is above all one of listening, observing and understanding the strategy that children use in a learning situation.” Children possess great potential and abilities. Our role, as adults in their lives, is to give them space, time, and guidance so they will be able to discover their own potential and abilities. At times we tend to do so much for our children that we lose sight of how much they can do for themselves. We appreciate your cooperation in having this day of learning and introspection.
