This week was filled with fun activities rich with symbolism tied to Passover and the Jewish people’s Exodus out of Egypt. The class enjoyed retelling the story each morning using puppets, dolls and took on the characters of the Passover story. We discussed the characteristics that each of the characters portrayed in the story. Their acting showed these qualities of who they became.
We have also started making our Passover item that each child will take home for their Seder. We are making an “Afikomen holder.” We have discussed that this is where the piece goes that breaks off from the middle matzah during the Seder, which then gets hidden for the children to find later on. Each child is “sewing” it first and then will decorate it. This skill using their hand eye coordination is important when taking the plastic “needle” and finding the hole the yarn goes through next. This also strengthens their fine motor skills at the same time. They are looking fabulous and their sewing looks spectacular! We incorporated a math lesson using our Wise Learning Process curriculum. The kids were each given 10 MnM’s at random on a plate. We read through a book which walked us through different math activities. They sorted the colors into groups. They decided which color had the greatest amount of MnM’s. They made all their pieces into a diagonal line. They then put their candies into shapes such as: a square, circle and even a triangle. After that they added their different colors together. Last but not least, they subtracted by eating one or two MnM’s at a time to show that when you take something away, you are subtracting. We think they enjoyed the subtraction part the best.
