Newsletter Room 9 September 16th - September 29th 2019
This week in room 9 we delved deeper into the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. As the children entered our classroom, on one table, there were many objects that pertained to this holiday. The children were able to immerse themselves in these objects that are used to bring in the new year, such as shofars, apples, pomegranates, and honey. During our group discussions, we emphasized the meaning of each object and learned more about them. Ella told the class that rimon means pomegranate in Hebrew. We discovered that we get shofars from a ram’s horn and that on Rosh Hashanah the shofar blasts in distinctive patterns. We eat round challahs for Rosh Hashanah. We’ve been talking about eating apples dipped in honey to have a sweet new year. This led to a discussion about our sense of taste and all the different tastes that we can experience. We decided to have a tasting test to see which taste we liked the best, spicy, salty, sour or sweet. For spicy the children tried Jalapeno potato chips, for salty they tried pita chips, for sour they tried lemon slices and for sweet they tried banana chips. We are so proud of the children for taking risks and trying flavors they might not have been familiar with. To develop a sense of community, we invited Room 1 (the Hebrew immersion classroom) to come to our classroom, and we shared our knowledge and excitement of Rosh Hashanah. Here are some examples of the children’s comments: “I know a lot of Hebrew.” Ella “How did it get off?” (the ram’s horn) Preston “The challah is a circle shape.” Jacob The teacher asked: Why do we eat apples dipped in honey for Rosh Hashanah? Hardy said: “Because it has to be a sweet new year.” This week we also discussed what it means to do a Mitzvah. Kayla said: “When you are being kind”. Evan said: “Homeless means you have some stuff, but not enough. You have to give the money to help them.” Madison said: “I do mitzvahs for my grandma, my mom and my dad.” Emma said: You can bring toys to people who don’t have any.” It was very exciting to visit our yoga studio this week. Every week the children travel to another environment and explore some yoga poses related to this environment.
