Newsletter Room 9 September 9th-September 13th 2019
This week in room 9 we were busy with exploration and discovery! It is wonderful to see how the children are coming together as a unit, working together to solve challenges, build relationships and have fun along the way. The class made playdough from scratch and needed to follow a recipe in order to get the desired result. Each child participated by adding the correct ingredient to the bowl. The children needed to practice their patience by waiting for their turn. It was marvelous to watch them all work as a team! The end-product was a terrific blob of lime green playdough, and the children were immensely proud. They continue to enjoy using it in many different and creative ways. We talked about the differences and similarities between things and what that mean. How some things are the same and some things are different. We discussed how last week Emma saw a lizard on the wall. We read a cool book on lizards and snakes called Lizards and Snakes by Sally Morgan. We then asked the class: How are lizards and snakes the same and how are they different? This exercise is a part of our Wise Learning Process, which teaches the children to ‘learn how to learn’. Evan said: “Some snakes are venomous and some lizards are venomous.” Hardy said: “They are both reptiles.” Jacob said: “They both have bodies.” Ella said: “They both have mouths.” Kayla said: “lizards walk slow and snakes slither slow.” The teacher noticed that lizards have legs, but snakes do not! We will continue to explore these fascinating creatures! We have also been learning about the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. Since we eat apples and honey during this holiday we brought in many different varieties of apples, such as honey crisp, red delicious, gala, Fuji and granny smith. We talked about their details, which is another aspect of the Wise Learning Process. Preston said: “The honey crisp apple is juicy.” Ella said: “They are really, really, really yummy.” Evan said: “the green one is sour.” Kayla said: “G-d made up their names.” Emma said: “I like the red delicious apple.” We asked the children if they look the same or different. Then we asked the children where apples come from. Preston said the grocery store, but Madison said apple trees! Then we had an apple tasting. The kids loved tasting all the different kinds. We took a poll. 5 liked the red delicious, 3 liked the honey crisp and 1 liked all of the apples. Reminders: No school 9/30 and 10/1 Rosh Hashanah Early dismissal @ 12:00 (no lunch) 10/8 Erev Yom Kippur No school 10/19 Yom Kippur
