This week we began talking about sounds and all the different things we hear. It began with a beautiful set of wind chimes that Room 9 received. As the teacher held them up and the notes chimed out, the children were captivated by the sounds. That led to a discussion about “What is something you hear?” Their responses were phenomenal. “I hear children making sounds. I hear children laughing.” I can hear music.” “I hear the birds making sounds.” “I hear the construction. The drills and noise.” “I hear people talking next door.” “Yode ley hee hoo!” “The sounds that bees make. Bzzzz.” “I hear the Velcro on my shoes.” “I hear a fly flying around right now. Zzzzz.” “I hear someone playing guitar.” “I can hear an ambulance. Weeyoo weeyoo.” During our study of sounds, we brought out various types of musical instruments. The children were drawn to this center and they shook them and banged on them and heard the many sounds they made. During our discussions on sounds we discovered the similarities and differences between the instruments. They were able to describe the many details they had in common and what was different about them. Our first farmers market of the year was a huge success. The kids were so excited to go shopping. They brought a lot of tzedakah for Beit Issie and were proud to spend their money for such a good cause.
