Newsletter Room 9 October 15th - October 18th 2019
This short week in Room 9 we introduced the holiday of Sukkot. We read the book, “Sukkot” by Sophia N. Cedarbaum to the class as a way of reintroducing this wonderful holiday. Many of the children already have memories of the holiday from past events in their own family. We heard comments that many have seen the Sukkahs being built around the school and even in their own back yards. The children were very excited to create decorations for our sukkah. We met the Rabbi in the sukkah and were able to shake the lulav and etrog in all directions to reinforce the idea that God is everywhere. We would like to share with you a daily activity that Sanam, Preston's mom, (when she came to be our library reader) observed when she visited our classroom. She noticed that when the children finish their snack, they stand in line by the sink and wash their plates with soap all by themselves. We decided at the beginning of the school year to be environmentally friendly and avoid paper products as much as possible. We discussed that the children not only need to learn the ABC’s and other academic skills, but also need to learn how to take care of themselves and their environment. Why do we let the children do the dishes? By allowing kids to do things for themselves, we are helping them to feel good about themselves, learn to be responsible, become self-motivated and independent. We also avoid the pitfalls of over-indulgence. Reminders: October 21st No school Shemini Atzeret October 31st Early Dismissal @ 12 no lunch P/t conf.
