Newsletter Room 9 October 7th - October 11th 2019
This week in Room 9 in preparation for Yom Kippur, we invited Room 1 to come into our classroom to hear a wonderful book about the notion of ‘Tashlich’, or casting away. The book is called New Year at The Pier by April Halprin Wayland. It is a special story about all the ways Izzy and his family own up to their past errors and then toss them away into the ocean at the pier. Both classes were mesmerized by the story and obviously loved it, and the deeper meaning behind it. After reading it, we had a lively discussion about all the past errors we made that we want to toss away. The next day both classes met together to perform ‘Tashlich’. First, we sat down and retold the meaning of the symbolic ritual of Tashlich and that it is an opportunity to begin again with a clean slate. Then, all the children crowded around the wading pool. They began closing their eyes, thinking and pondering their past transgressions. It was a magical sight! Suddenly we heard comments such as: I wasn’t nice to my mom, I yelled at my brother, I was mean to my friend. The children took their crumbs tossed them into the water enthusiastically. They were all so involved, and it was just the best, most poignant moment to watch. Reminders: October 13- Sukkot Family Picnic at 4:30 P.M.
