Newsletter Room 9 November 11th - November 15th 2019
This week in Room 9 we continued discussing Native American culture. Did you know that the Native Americans discovered popcorn? We read a book titled: The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola, which describes how the Native Americans first discovered popcorn, the various types of popcorn, how to cook popcorn in sand, and how to make popcorn soup! We also talked about how Native Americans found their food. We asked the class: Did they have a grocery store to shop for their food? Like Ralphs or Gelsons? Everyone said “No!” Then we asked, how did they find their food? We learned that Native Americans needed to hunt for their food. After they hunted, they needed to cook their meat. We asked the class: How did the Native Americans make fire? Did they use matches? Evan: “No, they weren’t invented yet. They mashed rocks together to make fire.” Emma: “They got candles and they used rocks and put them on the candles.” Madison: “They put rocks on leaves.” Jacob: “They picked up a rock and dragged it on the ground and put sticks on top of the fire.” Ella: “They touched the sun with the candle. Then they made a shape of a volcano with the sticks.” We then did a demonstration. The teacher first asked the children to put their hands together and rub, faster and faster. We asked, what do you feel? They said: “it feels hot!” We said: “That is friction!” Then the teacher took two sticks and started rubbing them together, faster and faster. The teacher explained that the friction creates smoke and then fire would appear. The children were fascinated! This week we mastered the Letter ‘Ff’’. We explored the sound of the letter, the way it is written, and found words that start with the letter F. It is so fascinating to see the children finding F all around them. They noticed the letter on the title of a book we read, they noticed it on the school’s walls and just about everywhere. Be on the lookout, next week our letter of the week will be “Tt”!
