This week, as we continue our journey through Hanukkah, the children have worked so hard to create spectacular hanukkiot. They counted how many candle holders they needed, and they observed that the shamash or helper candle is always taller. They were able to choose from a variety of beautiful objects to decorate their hanukkiot and each child is so proud of their result.
On Monday, we joined the rest of the EC in celebrating Havdalah, a “separation” between Shabbat and the rest of the week. Room 9 kids absolutely love the beautiful songs that we sing at Havdalah and can be heard singing all the way back to class and during snack time. This seems to be something this class really enjoys, and we will continue to teach the prayers, learn about the symbols and even make our own! Thursdays we love to see Rabbi Josh! His warmth, sense of humor and insight make it a special time with our children. Unfortunately, he was not able to join us this week due to him helping out with the Elementary School Open House. Our kids were overwhelmingly sad. One kid raised their hand and said we could make him cards to tell him we miss him. Another kid said that it was ok, because we could make and tell our own stories just like Rabbi Josh. It was so amazing to see how much he is valued with our children. Rabbi Josh was more than touched when we delivered the envelope with all their cards. We heard our kids talk mostly about the battle with the Maccabees. The children are fascinated with how the temple was destroyed and the objects that were left behind. When walking around the room, they may see a book with one of these symbols and start a conversation with a friend about what they have learned.
