This week has been all about the introduction of Hanukkah. We talked about the brave Maccabees who fought overwhelming odds against King Antiochus and his soldiers in the battle for religious freedom. The children surprised us by remembering so many details about the story of Hanukkah. After they were able to share their wide range of knowledge about the holiday, we revisited questions and statements. We wanted to scaffold the idea and differentiate the meaning behind a question. The children grasped the idea that this is how we ask for information. Some of these questions were, “Do we eat hallah on Hanukkah? When do you light the candles? Why do we have Hanukkah books? What do we do on Hanukkah? When do we use the kiddush cup? When is Hanukkah? What month is Hanukkah this year? What foods do we eat for Hanukkah?” The questions they asked were amazing and thought provoking. After snack that day, we were able to research in the books around the classroom and find some of the answers to our questions. The children were continuing to look through books even later in the day and week, and they showed the teachers and their friends pictures that may have answered some of their questions. They were most surprised that we do in fact eat hallah on Hanukkah because Shabbat still falls on one of the nights.
