Newsletter Room 9 December 9th- December 13th
This week in Room 9, we continued exploring and experiencing the holiday of Hanukkah. During the week the children played the game of dreidel with their friends and teachers. Each child had ten pennies and a dreidel and quickly learned what each Hebrew letter signifies: Nun, take nothing, Gimel, take all, Hay, take half, and Shin, put in one. We quickly learned it is a game of mathematics as well as a game of fun! The children were invited to create their own Hanukkiah. The teacher asked the children, how many bolts (candle holders) should you take? The children applied their skill of looking at details to the task of finding out how many candle holders they needed. They discovered that there are eight candles and one shamash - helper candle. Each child then counted out nine bolts to hold the candles and arranged them on the base. Then it was their choice how to decorate it. Many children created patterns with the stones and the jewels. They are just beautiful! Oil is a significant part of the Hanukkah story. The children love hearing about the miracle of the oil and how it lasted for eight days. The children in Room 9 love doing experiments. One day we asked the class: What is a Scientist? We heard all kinds of answers: Preston : “They make stuff and do experiments. Some explode and sometimes you need goggles for your eyes to protect them.” Emma : “Sometimes it comes out of a cup”. Hardy:“ A scientist is someone who talks a lot.” Evan: “Some experiments are like the real ocean.” Kayla: “Some experiments explode.” Emma: “Goggles save our eyes.” Madison: “If you’re at the beach, you have to wear goggles.” We did an experiment by showing the class two different liquids; water and oil. We asked the class: Do you know what a liquid is? “Something that is wet,” said Hardy. Can you think of another liquid? We heard: juice, orange juice, grape juice, pool water and ocean water. Then we posed the question, what will happen if we mix the water with the oil? Madison: “Maybe it will turn to something else.” Hardy: “Maybe it will turn to apple juice.” First, we poured in some oil, then we poured in some water. We asked the class: What do you notice? Preston: “I see the water on the bottom.” Evan: “The oil is on the top.” Ella: “You can shake it.” We were shaking and shaking the bottle, but the oil and water still stayed separated, no matter how we held the bottle! This week we also learned that Annabelle and Ariella will be leaving us at the end of next week to go back to Russia. We are very sad to see them go as their teachers and friends have grown to love them very much. Each child drew a picture for them, which will go in a book which we will present to them next week.
