Newsletter Room 9 December 2th - December 6th
This week in Room 9, we began to discover the wonderful holiday of Hanukkah. As the children entered our classroom, they noticed that their surroundings had changed. We heard many comments from the children about all the changes. During our first group time on the rug, we asked the class, “What is Hanukkah?” Kayla said, “It’s a holiday.” We began to tell the story of Judah and the Maccabees and their bravery against all odds. As we retold the story, especially the part about King Antiochus, Preston expressed his feelings, “This story is making me mad!” Later in the week we did a Wise Learning Process activity with the class. We brought a Menorah and a Hanukkiah up in front of the children and asked, “What do we have here?” The answers that were given were: candles, fire, a menorah, and another child said, “I know how to say it in Hebrew, it’s a Hanukkiah.” We then asked the children if they can tell us the difference between the two. The children’s answers are indicative of how far they have come in being able to see many details! Emma: I see different colors. Hardy: Eight are short and one is tall on one, and on the other two is the same and the rest is tall. Evan: They’re different shapes and sizes. One is a semi-circle and one has a star in the middle. Annabelle: One is pink. Preston: The bottoms are different. Kayla: One has a star in the middle and one doesn’t. Ella: One has four candles on each side and one tall in the middle and on the other there’s three on each side and one tall. Jacob: One has seven and the other has nine. Madison: The colors are not the same. We continue to search and find more similarities and differences between a Menorah and a Hanukkiah. We want to thank the parents that bought books for Room 9 from the Book Fair. We love books so much, and your contribution to our library is so very much appreciated!! Thank-You!!!
