Newsletter Room 9 February 24th - February 28th 2020
This week in Room 9 has been busy with both Purim and Generations Day. The children had so much fun dressing up as Queen Esther, Vashti and King Achashverosh, and acting out the story of Purim with all its drama and intrigue. We heard books about Purim, especially one that was brought in from home entitled Barnyard Purim by Kelly Terwilliger that told the story of Purim with farm animals. The children loved it! Thank you, Emma, for bringing it in. The children were very excited all week to welcome their special guest for Generations Day on Friday. Each child created a beautiful drawing with pastels that, when finished, they then covered with watercolors. After completing their picture, we asked each one what is special about their guest? This is what we heard: “You are special to me because you’re nice to me and you let me have a sleep over and you come to my house.” -Madison “You are special to me because you make for me and my brother fun a lot. You always, always, always take care of us. You also do the same thing for my mom. You are also very funny.” -Ella “You are special to me because I love to wrestle with you and sword fight with you. And because you teach me basketball”. -Evan “You are special to me because you love me so much and I like to play games with you.” -Hardy “You are special to me because you look beautiful and you look cute. I love you because you have a telephone. I love to play with you and hug you and kiss you.” -Emma “You are special to me because you take me on the trampoline at ahmoo’s house when you are there. You also help me practice dribbling when it’s almost time for me to play basketball.” -Kayla “You are special to me because you’re silly and you’re nice and kindful.” -Preston “You are special to me because you are very old and very nice. You get me a lot of cars whenever you see them. You’re very, very big.” -Jacob Lunch time is an important learning experience as well as any other activity. It is a space for the children to express their thoughts, feelings, and inquiries. This week two main discussions took place during lunch. One was about healthy food. The children checked each other’s lunch boxes and discussed what is healthy and what is not healthy as well as what they love to eat. The other discussion started as a child asked - when are we taking our dream catchers back home? Our answer was – at the end of the year. The child seemed disappointed. We furthered asked – would you like to take it home now? The child replied yes. We asked – Why? Do you have bad dreams? And a big discussion started about nightmares. They described their nightmares and some of them shared that their nightmares are about evil characters from movies they watch. We love how lunchtime becomes a time when the children can open up and express themselves in such unique and important ways. A big Thank You to your family member who came and share the day and celebrate Shabbat in our class/school. It was a great success.
