Dear Parents, Before jumping into Purim, we thought we would take advantage of the short week to revisit Shabbat and discuss why we celebrate Shabbat every Friday. We started the conversation by talking about the seven days of creation. We talked about Sova, Tzedakah and why it is important to help people in need. All of this connects to our previous discussions about being respectful to ourselves and to others. On Wednesday, Ellie's grandparents came to visit the classroom. Ellie's grandfather read a book to the children, “The Shabbat Box.” In the book, the children have Shabbat boxes that they share and take home every Friday. Inside the box, there were candlesticks, kiddush cups, and a challah cover. We thought it would be nice if the children were able to make their own Shabbat box with some of the items that we need to celebrate Shabbat. This week, the children decorated kippot, that they could wear every Friday when we go to the synagogue. Rabbi Sari started our Storah time conversation with the building of the Mishkan. Afterwards, she told the children the story “Stone Soup” a folk story in which a stranger convinces the people of a small town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a Shabbat meal that everyone could enjoy together. The people of the small town learned the value of sharing and coming together as a community.
