This week in Room 14 was all about Rosh Hashanah. We talked about the different things we eat for Rosh Hashanah and what they symbolize: Apple and Honey, Pomegranate, the head of a fish and round Challah. The children all shared their personal favorites, and we saw that each of them prefers different foods. There was one clear consensus: Nothing beats Challah!!
In preparation for the holiday, we are also focusing on preparing different apple based dishes. We started the week with Apple Bread, and on Friday we made a Challah with a hidden surprise within – Apples and Honey! The children love to bake and it is inspiring to see how even those who dislike apple or honey are happy to eat it when they have made it themselves. One of everyone’s favorite traditions was the Shofar. The children first tried to guess which animal and what organ the Shofar came from. Horse, elephant, deer were only some of the conjectures. Then we saw pictures of different horned animals (and an elephant). We compared forms, sizes and colors of the horns of different animals from pictures and tried to match them with different Shofars. That’s how we discovered where the Shofar comes from. And also that an elephant has no horns… Rabbi Sari visited us this week and told us the story of creation, of the sun and moon fighting for their space in the heaven until God found them a solution. Everyone was fascinated and we also learned how we can share our space while each having space of our own. We also learned how we can help others with Tzedakah and Sova. We’d be grateful if you could send Tzedakah and Sova with your children on Fridays so that they can fulfill this Mitzvah. Continuing from last week when learned of different shapes, the children were given different color-filled shapes. They first built a palace, a tower, a car track. Then they put them on their eyes and saw how everything looked. They put them on top of each other and saw how new color is born. There was great excitement in class following this groundbreaking discovery and more and more kids soon joined the experiment. Next week we will mix colors with other elements as well and see what happens. Shabbat Shalom!
