Dear Parents, We started off the week with Havdalah and a beautiful Tu B'Shevat celebration. We all gathered on the front yard around the tree in front of room 13. It was a windy day, but despite the wind blowing out the Havdalah candle, we managed to have a very lovely ceremony. Afterward, we talk about the importance of trees and plants. We opened a large bag of soil and placed it on the existing dirt. The children spread out the soil and covered all areas around the tree. When we were done with the soil the children placed large, medium and small rocks on top of the soil. Some of the children planted succulents in the garden as well. We will continue to add to our garden to improve the quality and look of it. We continued the celebration with a fruit tasting with room 15. Teacher Anne read a book, one of our favorites, “The Littlest Tree” by Sylvia Rouss. After the book we did a special blessing for the fruits that grow on trees and for the ones that grow from the ground. We sampled fresh and dried fruits, we had olives, avocados, dates and pita bread. Even though Tu B’Shevat is over, we continued with a few more planting science experiments. Last week we started to plant beans in small pots. This week, more children had a chance to plant. We also took some beans and placed them on a wet paper towel to see if they will grow the same way as the beans that we planted in the pots. On Wednesday, we decided to take the Indian Corn that we had from Fall, and we placed it into 1/3 cup of water. The experiment is called “Sprouting Indian Corn.” In about a week, we should notice sprouts beginning to appear. Ask your child to show you when you drop off next week. While waiting for Rabbi Sari on Wednesday, we had a brief discussion about Presidents’ Day. Room 15 was with us during the discussion. We asked questions and received some interesting answers about the past and present presidents. We examined coins and bills and we matched up the faces that we saw on the coins with web pictures that we pulled up. The following day we made mini apple crisp pies. Each child made their own little miniature pie and took it home. During yard time the children from rooms 12, 13, 14 and 15 received tickets to buy frozen fruit smoothies from the teachers. Some of the children could see that the fruit was blended. The look on some of their faces when they got to see the fruit blend up was priceless.
