Dear Room 13 Families, What a wonderful and busy week, full of new discoverers here in Room 13! When the children returned from our Explorer community Havdalah, they immediately made their way over to our ball ramp. They were thrilled to notice that in addition to the giant wooden balls there were now medium sized marbles as well as small marbles. Working together, in both large and small groups, the children realized that the small marbles did not go down on their own, but needed the help of the larger balls. Again, it was amazing listening to them hypothesize and theorize why this was happening and how they could solve this problem. Throughout the week, we asked different children to share these new ideas and discoveries with our whole class. Together they then built on these, posing new and inquiring ideas. We will continue to add new materials, new forms of ramps and allow for the children’s inquisitive minds to guide us. While the children have been forming all of these ideas built around one single ramp with a limited amount of materials to roll down it, they have needed to use and build some extremely important social skills. While working in both large and small groups, as well as in partners, the children have been working on taking turns, sharing the materials, using their kind words with one another, as well as figuring out how to share their amazing discoveries with one another. At times, this has become frustrating for some, however, with the help of their peers and teachers, we have worked through it, all while gaining these useful and important life skills. Throughout our week, we have been discussing the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King. We have tied it in with our school value of Kulanu K’echad, All of Us as One, as well as to all of our discussions of working together and being kind to one another. We reminded ourselves of the Maccabees and how they stood up for the right to be Jewish and to celebrate in the way they wanted and how Dr. King and others spoke out and marched for the right for all to be treated equally and fairly. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat service and celebration. We made challah, sang the blessings and had the pleasure of celebrating with our Room 13 community, as well as our Explorer/Investigator grade level. Shabbat Shalom, Hannah and Chen Reminders: *Please remember to sign your child in and out, with a legible signature, EVERY day, as well as the time.
