Dear Room 13 Families,
Purim has finally arrived! We had been looking forward to this day for many weeks now; hearing the story, singing songs and even making special Purim treats. And finally, this week, Purim was here. We began our week with a new tradition in our school, celebrating Havdallah as one community. Havdallah is a short service that marks the separation between Shabbat and the rest of the week, where we sing the blessings over the grape juice, spices and twisted candle. It was a beautiful way to enter the new week. We will continue this tradition within our class on the weeks that it is not school-wide. After welcoming in the new week, it was time to get to the excitement of Purim. With each song and story we read/tell, we have reminders of the values the story holds; standing up for what you believe in, all being created in God’s Image and how special we feel as the Jewish people. We, of course, continued working on our masks, another small reminder of who we are on the inside versus what others see on the outside or who we may pretend to be. We continued to think about this idea, while we painted our faces and transformed into Kings, Queens, snakes, dinosaurs and even butterflies! Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers for helping us to make this happen! We continued to learn fun and exciting Purim songs in both Hebrew and English. We also discussed the Purim tradition of making and delivering Mishloah Manot. The children had the opportunity to make more Hamentashen, with the understanding that they were to be delivered to their families, rather than eaten for snack. We then assembled and delivered our Mishloach Manot. The children brought one to Jen Shankman, to welcome her to our school, and one to Rabbi Josh, thanking him for the wonderful stories he tells us, as well as for celebrating Shabbat with us.. When delivering the basket to Rabbi Josh, we also had the opportunity to learn with him. He brought a Megillah for the children to see where the story of Purim comes from, and he sat with us as we discussed more about Purim. We ended our week with an exciting Purim Shabbat! The children had a great time in costumes, seeing the Purim story acted out by teachers, Ditza and Rabbi Josh. We ended our week with the opportunity to celebrate a beautiful Shabbat with Lola and her family. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
