Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow, what a wonderful, busy and exciting week here in the Room 13 classroom. After beginning our week with a beautiful Havdalah service with our Explorers/Investigators community, we dove right into our continued explorations. The children were, once again, overjoyed to mix colors at the Art center and to discover all the new colors they were able to make. They found letters on rocks and became very excited when they were able to find all the letters they needed to form their name or that of their friends. The children worked together with their friends to create designs out of shapes of all colors and sizes. In our continued conversation of the upcoming holiday of Tu BiSh’vat, a very interesting piece arose from our conversations. As the children were washing their hands in the bathroom, a very heated debate on how many paper towels is too many paper towels began. Over hearing this amazing conversation, we took it back to our circle time to discuss the importance of this conversation as well as the deeper meaning and reasoning. The children were shocked to learn that paper towels (wood and other paper products) actually come from trees! After learning this, we discussed what it means to be wasteful and how we can help our trees by not using an overabundance of materials that come from trees. Throughout the rest of the week, the children have been proudly telling one another, “I only used 1 paper towel!” or “Today I need 2, but I will only use 1 next time.” The continued excitement for our balls/cars and ramps has continued to grow and develop throughout our week. The children continued to work together using the wooden ramp with cars, marbles and balls. Using the cardboard ramp seemed a bit more challenging this week as the cardboard is beginning to bend with wear and tear in places the children are not wanting it to. We brought this challenge to the group and together they brainstormed a number of amazing ideas. These ideas were then put to the challenge during center time. One day, while playing on the yard, two of our friends began rolling a large ball up and down the slides on Wise Woods. After observing the children and watching them try to again resolve their challenges (the ball would not consistently roll all the way to the top of the slide, how hard/gentle did one need to be to make this happen, etc), we once again brought this new and amazing challenge to the group. On Thursday, we gathered for circle time around the slides on the play yard, and we began to work together to solve these new issues. Ideas were thrown out, hypothesis were made, tested and challenged over and over! We will continue to challenge our new theories on this new ramp form that has now been introduced to the group! Throughout the week, the children enjoyed spending their time in the Art Studio, Yoga Studio, Library and Music Room! In the Art Studio, half of the children (the other half will visit next week) worked with Joanne on created art work with crayons and water colors, watching the interaction as the water colors were placed over the crayon work. In the Yoga Studio, we took a trip to Hawaii and learned yoga poses for all things Hawaiian, such as surf boards and Palm trees. We joined together with Joelle and her dad to read books together in the Library and had our first visit to the Music Room! We played the drums, sang songs about Tu BiSh’vat and shook fruit shaped shakers. On Thursday, we had the joy of celebrating Hannah’s birthday all together as a class community. It was such a wonderful and joyous celebration! The children showered her with love, beaded special necklaces, painted a heart bouquet, created a flower crow, making chocolate hearts and enjoyed a delicious cake together! We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat service and celebration. We had the pleasure of celebrating with Leyton, his family and the rest of our Room 13 community.
