Dear Room 13 Families, Wow! What a silly and joyous week we had here in Room 13! We began our wonderful week by celebrating Havdalah in our pajamas! It was a very cozy way of saying goodbye to Shabbat and hello to our new week. We were also joined by the Pre-K Hebrew Immersion class for Havdalah. When we ended our service both Hebrew classes sang an amazing Purim song to our classes and then we joined together in additional Purim songs. This was a wonderful way to begin our exciting week full of Purim celebrations. After Havdalah, we came back to class just in time to form and bake some delicious Hamantashen! We refreshed our memories on why we make and eat these amazing treats during Purim (reminding us of Haman’s 3-cornered hat and/or ears) and then got right to work. The children worked hard flattening their balls of dough, adding filling to the center and then shaped then into triangles. As they baked, our room filled with the delicious smell of our wonderful Purim treats. Each child made 3 Hamantashen, keeping in mind one was to try as it came out of the oven, one for family and one to give to someone special within our school. On Tuesday, we had an amazing, very busy day. We began our morning with a fabulous, Purim themed Yoga class. We first met our Adventure guide, Mordechai and together we flew to the town of Shushan. Once there we met King Achashverosh who did his favorite pose, thrown pose, then Esther and her favorite pose, star pose. Our Adventure guide’s favorite pose was the warrior pose and then it was time to meet Haman. Haman’s favorite pose was child’s pose because it looks like everyone is bowing down to him. Right away, one child said, but we don’t bow down to Haman and another shouted out that Jewish people only bow down to God. We explained that since this is just a yoga pose it is ok, but that they are absolutely right! We had a fabulous time visiting Shushan and then it was time to fly back home. After yoga we immediately headed over to the Library where Hardy and his Dads read all of Hardy’s favorite stories to us. The children listened intently to all of the silly rhymes within the Dr. Seuss stories. Thank you so much to Hardy and his Daddy and Dada for reading to us. By Wednesday we were ready to create our Mishloach Manot (Purim baskets). The children were so excited to create these delicious treats for their families and a few special people here at school. We discussed how giving Mishloach Manot is one of the mitzvot of Purim. How we use this as one of the many times we stop to think about others in our lives and others in need. Each child had the opportunity to decorate and fill the baskets for their families. They were so excited to bring them home to share with all of you. On Thursday, we had the joy of walking around and delivering our Mishloach Manot to special people here at school. We read a book entitled, Max; a story of a young boy born into a family of Superheroes, however we cannot fly like the rest of them. By the end of the book, Max musters up enough bravery to fly to save a baby bird. This book created a wonderful discussion within our circle time. It began with one child mentioning that real people cannot fly and another adding that it is only real Superheroes that can fly. At that moment, a few children excitedly began discussing the difference in real and pretend Superheroes. Josiah then put it simply, “Superheroes are pretend and they can fly and have other powers. Real people are called Heroes and they help others in real ways.” This ended our discussion for today, however we will definitely revisit this thought! Finally, Purim arrived and it was time to celebrate with the whole school! We joined together in the Sanctuary to sing Purim songs, read the Megillah (the scroll that contains the story of Purim), watch as the Rabbis, Ditza and teachers put on a silly Purim Shpeil and parade in our costumes! It was truly a joyous time had by all. We ended our week with a beautiful All School Shabbat service and Room 13 community celebration. We want to thank you all for helping your children participate in our week full of costumes. It added so much joy and silliness to our week of Purim fun! The children loved dressing up and those who did not want to, still greatly enjoyed seeing each day what their friends were going to dress up as.
