Dear Room 13 Families, Wow! We have had yet another, fun-filled, exciting, Passover-filled week here in Room 13. We began our week with a beautiful Havdalah service with the rest of our Explorer community. We gathered together to bless the grape juice, smell the spices, watch the shadows from the candle and finally say good bye to Shabbat and welcome in the new week. After Havdalah, we stayed together to hear the story of Passover. All together, we again heard the story of how Moses and God saved the Israelite people from slavery in Egypt. Throughout our week we continued to hear the Passover story, we continued to sing a number of Passover songs and continued to work on our Passover artwork. As we learned our songs, we began to add hand motions and even costumes (which the children are very excited for you to see on Monday during our Seder.) We discussed what a Seder is, what items are on the Seder plate and why and what makes a Haggadah such a special book to use on Passover. When discussing our Seder plate items, we realized that many of them incorporate words that we have been associating with what makes one a Superhero; to get through bitterness (the Marror and Chazeret), we need strength, bravery and courage and the Zroah (shankbone) reminding us of the strength of the Israelite people. We discussed how just like in our story of Purim, our story of Passover has a hero as well. We talked about what it took for Moses to overcome his fear and head back to Egypt to stand up for the Israelite people. How he, with the help of God, used his bravery, courage and strength to free the Israelites from slavery. Each child worked so hard throughout our week, creating their very own Seder plate. They worked with chalk paint markers for the first step of their plate. We will continue to work on these masterpieces throughout next week and will be ready for you all to enjoy for your Passover seders. After our amazing discussion on Moses as a Superhero, we decided he needed a special Super Moses cape (even though we reminded the children that not all heroes wear capes). We studied a number of different Superhero capes and observed that many of them have either the first letter of the character’s name or a special symbol that represents that character on them. Right away the children said we should put Moses’s letter on it! After sounding it out, Kayla proudly says “we need to put an M for Moses and Madison on his cape!” Then Ashton asked, “But what about an A for me?” To which then Preston added, “And what about a P for Preston?” We quickly told the children that we will revisit this idea and maybe each of them can create their very own Superhero cape with their letter or a symbol that would represent each of them on it. The children were very excited by this idea and we look forward to revisiting it after Spring Break. We also had the joy of participating in Yoga and reading stories with Lilly and her mom at the school Library. We heard the wonderful midrash (a Rabbi’s story created to explain a piece of Torah) of Nachshon entering into the Sea of Reads before it had split; showing his bravery, courage and belief in God. We then visited Andrew in the Music room where we sang a number of Passover songs, made the parachute go up and down and used boomwhackers as their shovels while they pretended to be slaves in Egypt. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat, celebrating with Eve and her family.
