Dear Room 13 Families,
Another wonderful week was had here in Room 13! We began our week like we do each week with a beautiful Havdalah service. The children sang the blessings together as we said good bye to our week and hello to our new week to come. They watched and listened closely as the candle was extinguished, waiting for our new week to begin. With Mother and Grandmother’s week behind us, we jumped right into the holiday of Shavuot! We began our week with hearing the story of Moses receiving the Ten commandments/Torah at Mount Sinai. The children heard all about how when Moses came down with this wonderful present from God, he was shocked to see they had created a Golden Calf, an idol, to pray to. Moses was so angry that he broke the tablets and had to go back up Mt. Sinai. The second time he came down, the Israelites were there waiting for him with open arms, excited to receive God’s rules. Together we discussed some of the mitzvot that God has commanded the Jewish people to follow; we have only one God and should not pray to others, celebrate Shabbat, honor your parents, you should not hurt others, you should not take from others and you should not want what others have. Throughout the week, we came back to this discussion and talked about why and how important these rules are to us. We discussed what might happen if we did not have rules like these. We realized how truly important the commandments and Torah are to the Jewish people. We also discussed Shavuot as a celebration of the spring harvest. We learned that people celebrate by wearing white, “bekurim” (giving fruit baskets) and decorating with flowers. The children painted bowls to create their own fruit baskets and beaded flower crowns to wear in celebration of Shavuot. Throughout the rest of the week, the children played games and ran relay races during our My Gym time, the learned new songs with Andrew our Music teacher and heard a wonderful Shavuot story from Rabbi Josh. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration! We had the pleasure of celebrating Shabbat with Sammy, Whitman and their families, as well as celebrating Whitman’s 4th birthday! On this very special Shabbat, we also celebrated Shavuot as a class and as a school. The children looked beautiful in their white clothes and flower crowns. During Shabbat services, we heard an amazing Shavuot story and enjoyed celebrating together as a school. Chag Shavuot Sameach and Shabbat Shalom, Hannah and Chen Reminders:
