Dear Room 13 Families,
What a fun and exciting week here in Room 13. We began each week like we do, with a beautiful class Havdalah service. After Havdalah, we began talking about our upcoming Pajama day. We discussed the excitement of coming to school in our PJs and how silly our day will be. We then, after singing Modeh Ani, the prayer for thanking God for waking up our bodies, turned our discussion towards the prayers we say at night before going to bed. We talked about how the Shema, which the children know from saying in the Sanctuary on Shabbat, is also a prayer that we say when we lie down at night and when we rise up in the morning. We discussed how many people think it is the most important prayer we have, reminding us that we have only one God. We then learned about the Hashkevenu, a prayer for God’s protection as we sleep. We listened to a beautiful version of the prayer as the children lay on the floor pretending to sleep. After hearing the prayer we introduced what we would be working on at the Art Center. We showed the children a dream catcher, explaining that it allows all your good dreams to flow through. We discussed how our dream catchers will have the Hashkevenu prayer in the middle, reminding us of God’s protection. The children began painting the dream catchers, as well as the beads. Finally, Tuesday arrived and the room was full of excitement. The children had a great day, coming to school in their pajamas, singing, dancing, playing and working throughout our day. They finished their dream catchers by attaching their painted beads and feathers. We even had special Jewish Lullabies on at rest time! We also want to give a big thank you to Michelle and Pierce for being our first Library readers. The children has such a great time hearing stories and spending time reading on their own in this new space. On Wednesday, we began discussing the upcoming holiday of Thanksgiving. We talked about both the traditions of the holiday, the festive meal with family and friends and the value of being thankful and showing gratitude. We will continue these discussions over the next few weeks. As we talked about the harvest and what types of vegetable are ready to be picked at this time of year, of course the children thought of pumpkins. We looked at numerous types of squash and discussed the similarities and differences. Over the next few days, the children made silly faced pumpkins as well as pumpkin portraits. They are looking forward to next week, when we will cut open some of the squash to see if they are the same or different on the inside. On Thursday, we heard a great story from Rabbi Josh from the Torah about building friendship. We also had the opportunity to sing new songs, play the hand drums and learn hand motions to a friendship song with Andrew. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Sonny, Isabella and their families. We want to give a big thank you for all the exciting new books donated to our classroom from the Book Fair. We look forward to reading them with you children!
