Dear Room 13 Families, It was so wonderful to have a full and very busy week here in Room 13! We began our week by reviewing our discussions from the holiday of Simchat Torah. We again discussed the importance of the Torah; reminding ourselves that it is full of important Jewish stories that teach us how to live our lives full of kindness, love, joy and gratitude. We reminded ourselves that on Simchat Torah, we finished reading the Torah and started it all over again, just like our favorite stories. Knowing our class’s excitement and interest in hearing and learning new stories, we thought to focus our week on the story of Bereshit, Creation. The children were immediately enthralled with the story; excited to see as more and more props were introduced to the story (blue colored water, plants, sea creatures, land animals and finally people.) The children were curious about how in the beginning it was dark and nothing was there and how God could create all of these wonderful things that we have today. After hearing the full story of Creation, we began to focus day by day, looking deeper into each of God’s creations. The children were overjoyed when they learned that they would have the opportunity to create their very own canvas, representing the 7 days of Creation. Throughout the week, the children worked diligently on Day 1 and will continue over the next week or so. We learned a wonderful song that moves through the days of creation, reminding us of all the amazing things God created during this special time. As our discussions continued, we also began to discuss how grateful we are for each of God’s creations and how we express our gratitude to God verses how we might express it to others. These conversations will also continue as the weeks go on. The children were so excited to be back into our regular schedule of Specialists. We began on Monday by visiting the Art Studio, where each child worked with water colors on cotton paper. We learned the proper technique for washing our brushes and enjoyed having our papers sprayed down with a water “shower.” On Tuesday, we joined Cheryl at the Yoga Studio and filled our bucket with more poses of our emotions. We also had a great time with Marcos, our Music Teacher, pretended that the colorful scarves were leaves falling all around us! The children also had an amazing and yet challenging time learning how to play Color Shape Bingo together in small groups at our Math Center. We began by having a teacher facilitate the game where by the end of the week, the children were calling out the Shapes/Colors for one another. And at our Literacy Center, they had a wonderful time searching for the proper lower case letter key to fit into the upper case letter lock. This is a very tricky skill, one that we will continue to work on. However, it was fun to watch as the week went on, the children again began helping one another with finding the proper letter/key to unlock their locks! We had the pleasure of celebrating Shabbat this week with Abigail, Tamara, their family and the rest of our Room 13 community.
