Dear Parents,
The children have had a great time this week continuing their exploration of science! We looked at the bean plants that we planted last week and compared ones planted in bigger planets versus smaller ones. This led to discussions about comparisons, practice with vocabulary such as more/less/short/tall and exercising the children’s recall by reviewing what the planting process was. The children used their memory to recall not only the steps of our previous planting project but also the conversations that we had about what the plants needed to grow as big as they could. Also, in science this week, we explored water absorption. The children filled sensory bins with water beads, found a rock to compare the size with, filled the container with water and looked at what happened to the beads. They grew ten times in size and there were a variety of smaller beads and larger ones that were the size of small lemons! This continued our discussion of comparisons and the corresponding vocabulary, connecting also to the rock that was our original size comparison. We discussed Presidents day, what a president is, and looked at money that had their faces on it. We did a science experiment cleaning pennies as we focused our discussion on Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Last week we practiced rhyming with ending sounds and this week we worked on initial sounds using an alphabet mystery box game. The children identify the sound that they hear in the beginning of an object that is pulled and finds the letter that matches that sound. We encourage you at home to talk about what words start with what sound and what letter makes that sound, such as food on your dinner plate or different things that you see on a neighborhood walk. The children also used a locks matching game to count the number of stars on a lock and match it with the key that has that number on it. This was good practice for numbers 1-10 recognition as well as fine motor strengthening to fit the key inside the hole. We apologize for the inconvenience of having to have picture day rescheduled due to the weather. Please keep a look out for an update on the new picture day date. Thank you to Natalya’s family for coming to celebrate her birthday and to be Shabbat family. Reminders: There is no school Monday for Presidents’ Day and no school Tuesday for professional development day. Purim dress up is on Friday March 2nd, the day of our Purim Shabbat service. Please be on the look out for sign up for conferences, which should be coming from the office. Save the date for our Passover seder on March 22nd, parents are invited but please no siblings. Shabbat Shalom, Room 14 teachers
