Dear Parents, This week was one filled with learning and fun as we explored subjects that the children are interested in. Throughout the year we have been spelling the children’s names with a melody during our group time. The children have shown more interest in their names and how they are spelled. This week we put out uppercase letter stamps for the children to use to spell out their names. This strengthened their letter recognition, required patience while finding a letter among many other choices, and helped the children the order of letters in their names. The children are so interested in nature, and so we have been discussing how to be respectful of the environment. We have also begun discussions about recycling. This week we peeled the paper off broken crayons and we melted them into new shapes! The children were given choices of what kind of silicon mold we would use and, after voting as a class, the consensus was on Lego people and blocks. The children chose their own colors and we discussed the science behind an oven and why the crayons melt in this way. With the recent stomach virus that has come through our class, the children were asking about why we all got sick at the same time. Going more in depth, we conducted an experiment to show how germs spread. Glitter was spread on some of the children’s hands and they then played normally by playing tag, touching toys, and high fiving a friend. We came back together and noticed how much the glitter had spread from only a few friends’ hands to everything that everybody touched. The lesson then moved to the bathroom as we spoke about how to properly wash our hands to make sure that we all stay healthy. We have been reading books on treating others and nature with respect, going along with our questions of the week. See if these questions can help guide discussions around the table during meal time or in the car! Books to look into:
