Dear Parents, We got to begin this week with a wonderful start, having Havdalah in the synagogue. It was led by Jen Shankman and the children got to sing new songs, see the special candle that is lit, the spices that we smell, and the kiddush cup that reminds them of Shabbat. We will get to do this once a month and going forward, we will be doing Havdaleh as a grade level the other three weeks of the month. We have taken out themed books about Mitzvot and helping the world around us, reading them at group time and keeping them at the children’s level at the shabbat table. It has been a pleasure to spark up conversations where the children say what they would do in the situation of a person in the book or suggest another way to help. Next week is the Beit Issie Farmer’s Market so our discussions of mitzvot, tzedakah and sova will only happen more often as we continue to expose the children ways of giving back to the community. We have continued our exploration of shapes and colors as well. At group time we completed a shapes scavenger hunt around the classroom, a memory game with basic shapes where the children close their eyes and a teacher removes one item, and we completed as a group the activity where children find shapes and use them to create larger pictures. The children also practiced drawing basic shapes, starting with straight lines and progressing to squares. This gives them the foundation for later drawing letters and having strengthens their fine motor skills. We also continued sharing fall items that were brought in, making predictions about what is inside, describing how they found the items and sharing the story with friends who may have a similar story. They learn about one another and find more commonalities. We had Library Time in the Max Hess Library for the first time and the children loved exploring the many books available and sitting for a story in the cozy early childhood room. We also had our “Storah” Time with Rabbi Sari where she told the parsha of the week, Noah and the arc, and sang a song about it. Music with Andrew also consisted of songs related to the story of Noah, where the children pretended to be animals and did a repeat after me song. In the slideshow this week you will see some pictures of the special watermelon pizza snack that we had this week, which was followed up by a group discussion about healthy eating habits and wise choices. You will also see a few pictures of the recycled pieces cars maze that the children made. We switched the items to balls halfway through the week to see how the children adapted their structure to a different material.
