Dear Parents, There are pictures and information throughout the newsletter, so please be sure to read through to the bottom and take a look at the photos! We enjoyed taking advantage of the rain this week and turning it into many opportunities to learn and grow. Earlier in the week, when the rain was lighter, the children put on their raincoats, grabbed their umbrellas, and played follow the leader as they walked around the yard. They explored different sized puddles, jumping with friends and having the sensory experience of the rain falling on their umbrellas above them. In times when people are kept up inside, which yes is wonderful in weather like this, it is also important to enjoy it and see it as beautiful in its own way. We also did a science experiment where shaving cream represented the cloud and blue water was added through droppers, strengthening fine motor development, until the "cloud" was so heavy that the "rain" fell through. This led to discussions about nature, tying in nicely to Tu B’Shevat which is coming on Monday. We have had books laid out along with real life pictures of nature around a corner of our room. The children have been looking at the pictures throughout the week, sparking questions about the animals that they see and smelling and feeling the fruit that we laid out. Throughout the `week we have been tasting these fruits that come from trees, such as pomegranate and green apples, and working on making full descriptive observations and asking thought provoking questions. We made chocolate chip banana bread this week, connecting it to Tu B’Shevat using the cocoa and banana, both coming from trees. With Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming up as well, as have focused many of our book readings and discussions at group time on equality and fairness. The children used their own lives as examples, and we have been talking about this topic throughout the year and will continue to do so. We laid out around the room pictures of children from around the world as well as a puzzle with drawings of kids from different countries. We had discussions about why we dress different and learned about some new places that we haven’t spoken about before. Reminders:
