Dear Room 13 Families, We began our week with a beautiful Havdalah. We really got to enjoy the light of the Havdalah candle since the sun was hiding behind the clouds. When we turned off the lights in the class room it was dark and the children noticed that there was no sun and that, therefore, we could not see our shadows. We also started our week by introducing the children to Fern. She made a great connection with them right away and the children already enjoy her presence. On Tuesday we went to the library and Samuel’s mom came with us and read us some books. With rain and cold continuing throughout the week, we decided to make vegetable soup to warm our bodies and souls. The children all gathered around the table and each of them cut vegetables (carrots, celery, potatoes, and sweet potatoes) into small pieces and put them in the pot. While we waited for the soup to cook, we read the book, “Stone Soup.” We also continued learning about lines. In our art center, the children glued branches in lines. They made letters with the tape on the rug, and they made shapes with the pipe cleaners. We spent time this week discussing Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as why we observe his birthday. We discussed how he noticed that people in his community were not being kind to each other and were not being treated equally. He wanted to make changes in the world. He used the power of his words to rally people for change. We remembered that in the story of Hanukkah, the Jewish people were also treated unfairly. Noah mentioned that the Maccabes had to fight, unlike Martin Luther King, Jr., who used his words to help make change. We talked about his dream and the children made their own pictures and shared with us their dreams for the world. With so much rain coming down all week, by Thursday we were more than ready for a dance party. The children really enjoyed taking turns in the circle as well as participating in freeze dance. We also played a color and shape bingo game with the whole class. We ended our week by celebrating Shabbat together as a class. We sang blessings together, enjoyed eating challah and singing with the Ditza and Rabbi Josh in the sanctuary.
