Dear Room 13 Families, What a busy and exciting week here is Room 13. We began our week with a beautiful Havdalah service. As we said goodbye to our amazing week that we had last week with all of our Fathers and Grandfathers and said hello to the exciting new and upcoming holiday of Purim! We began our week reading the book, “Still a Gorilla,” all about a gorilla who realizes that no matter what mask he is wearing, he is still a gorilla. We discussed this concept that no matter what costume we may be wearing, like on Purim, we are still the same us on the inside. The following day the children listened intently as they heard the story of the holiday of Purim. They learned all about King Achashverosh, Queen Vashti, Haman (booo), Mordechai and Queen Esther. We discussed the importance of standing up for yourself, as well as your community and looking out for others. We talked about the decisions that Haman made and feelings that he had and how, because of that, we don’t even want to hear his name in the story. The children had the opportunity to make their very own groggers and the next time we hear the story, they shock them each time they heard Haman’s name. As we thought about our group of buildings we, we decided to build a giant Palace of Shushan; the palace where King Achashverosh and Queen Esther lived. The children worked together to connect the poles (that had previously been used for our Sukkah) to create this wonderful space. If you have not yet seen it, please come by and visit. It will be up for the next few weeks. In continuation of the discussion of wearing masks and who we are on the outside vs on the inside, the children had the opportunity to create a mask of their very own face! We discussed that this mask will represent them (as it is created of their own individual faces), yet they will get to paint and decorate it, turning it into something/someone else. Our conversations about Purim, as well as creating the masks, will continue over the next few weeks. Throughout the rest of the week, the children worked hard cutting with scissors in the Office center, creating pictures with shapes in the Math center and worked on creating letters out of a variety of materials in the Literacy center. We also heard a great story in preparation for President’s Day about George Washington from Rabbi Josh and sang new songs with Andrew our Music teacher. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat with Riley, Luca and their families.
