Dear Room 13 Families, We want to start by thanking all of you that were able to join us at some point throughout our week celebrating Fathers and Grandfathers. You added so much extra joy to our classroom. We began our wonderful week, like we do each week, with a beautiful Havdalah service, this one made even more special with all of the guests that joined us. To begin our service, we often turn out the lights and since it was a dark and rainy day, when we did so, it was extra dark and the light of the Havdalah candle was extra bright! Together we sang the blessings over the grape juice, the spices, the candle and finally, the blessing of separation as we began our new week. Throughout our week, we continued our conversations all about how special our Dads and Grandfathers are within each of our lives. The children continued to share what they think makes each of you so special in their eyes, as well as their favorite things to do with each of you. If you have not yet seen their Dad Portraits on our wall, come check it out when you have a minute. At the Art Center, the children worked long, hard and with great pride creating a special picture for each of their dads (thank you all for sending us photos). It is always special to see the extra energy each child puts into their work when they are creating something for someone super special in their lives! On Wednesday, one friend, very excitedly, came out of our Green House (formerly known as our Light Room) shouting that “It changed! It grew!” Right away, everyone wanted to see what was going on. We quickly took out the bags of beans that were growing in the dark, as well as the corn kernels and brought them to our circle. We also gathered some of our beans and kernels that had been out in the sun light. The children had observed the differences and similarities; both bags the beans had changed, more growth had occurred in the sunlight and that they did not need soil to grow. One child then noticed something else growing in the bags. We explained that with the dampness of the cotton balls and Oorbez, especially the ones in the dark, had begun to grow mold. We explained that, because of this, we could not keep them much longer, however the children wanted to see if any more change would occur before the end of the week, so we waited to see. By the end of the week, not much else had changed. We discussed the children’s original hypotheses to see if they had occurred. Did a stem grow? Was a tree growing in the bag? Were French fries coming out? Did it all turn purple? The children had a wonderful time seeing if their thoughts had turned into a reality. Throughout the rest of our week, we had many special guest readers in the classroom, as well as when we visited the Library. Thank you all so much! The children greatly enjoyed hearing a wonderful story from Rabbi Sari and singing and dancing with the parachute with Andrew, our Music teacher. We ended our week with a very special Shabbat celebration! The children had a wonderful time making challah and enjoyed spending time with their special visitors. We had a beautiful Shabbat celebration within our classroom and then made our way over to the Sanctuary. The children were overjoyed to see all of their special guests. They enjoyed celebrating together and sharing this special day together. Have a wonderful weekend! Shabbat Shalom, Hannah and Chen
