Dear Room 13 Families, We have had another amazing week here in Room 13! We began our week, as we do each week with a beautiful Havdalah service with the rest of our Explorer community. As we said good bye to Shabbat and welcomed in the new week, we had added to our weekly traditions of our service by adding helpers into our service. Now, each week, we will have helpers from each of our classes help to hold our ritual objects throughout our service. It was a wonderful addition to our service. With our upcoming Father and Grandfather’s Week, we began talking about the special men in our lives. The children shared what made their dads so special and important to each of them. During this discussion, one friend mentioned his dad is important to him because he protects him. Knowing our class’s love for superheroes, we discussed how our dads are like our very own superheroes. The children loved this idea and began listing superhero qualities that their dads have; they protect them, they keep them safe and they teach them new things. At the Art Center, the children worked so hard and with such pride, creating a portrait of their dads. They looked at photos while drawing, focusing on what color hair, eyes, etc. that their own dads have. Our discussions, art work and activities will continue throughout next week. On Wednesday we had an amazing day full of love, joy and celebrations! Together as a class, we celebrated Hannah’s birthday. We began our celebrations first thing as the children were entered the classroom, they handed Hannah a beautifully decorated bead that filled a special necklace and a flower that was turned into an amazing flower crown for Hannah to wear for the day. We spent our day showering Hannah with love, singing Happy Birthday over and over in English and in Hebrew, giving numerous hugs and telling her our favorite things to do together. It truly made for such a special day! On Thursday, we heard a wonderful story from Rabbi Sari about chicken soup and the importance of making sure each family has what they need. We sang songs and watched with joy as scarves flew off the parachute. With the rain pouring down, we did an impromptu experiment explaining where rain comes from. We discussed the process of evaporation and how water vapor fills the clouds till they are ready to pop and the rain pours down on us. We filled a vase with water (representing the air around us), squirted shaving cream on top (representing the cloud) and dropped blue water color into the shaving cream. When there was finally enough paint (water/rain), our cloud popped and the rain poured down, just like it was outside! We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Olivia and her family. We had the joy of not only celebrating Shabbat, but also coming together as a community to celebrate Olivia’s birthday. It was a wonderful end to an amazing week!
