Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow, what a busy and exciting week! We began our week with a beautiful school wide Havdalah service. We sat together in Plotkin as a community and said goodbye to Shabbat and hello to the week to come. After Havdalah, we had the pleasure of celebrating Ezekiel’s birthday! With Purim now behind us, we have already begun to delve into the story and values that Passover has to offer. We discussed the story of Passover, using props and demonstrations. The children listened intently as they watched a baby Moses float down the Nile River, with his sister Miriam standing by for safety. They learned about how Moses grew up in the palace with the mean Pharaoh and how the Israelite people had to work hard as Pharaoh’s slaves. We discussed what it meant to be slaves in Egypt and how it must have felt when they were finally free. They learned all about how Moses left Egypt after seeing how awful the Israelite people were being treated and how he later came back after God, speaking through a burning bush, asked him to return and help to free the Israelites. They watched closely as, after Pharaoh said No, with God’s help, Moses’s staff turned into a snake and as a container of water turned red, symbolizing Moses turning the water into dirty water. They sang songs about frogs jumping here and there and watched as the pretend Israelite people danced through two pieces of blue fabric, symbolizing the parting of the Sea of Reeds, all while understanding the importance of how, with God’s help, Moses stood up for the Israelite people. We briefly discussed what a Seder is and will go into more depth on this next week. We look forward to continuing these meaningful conversations and preparing for our class Seder over the next few weeks leading up to Passover. Throughout the rest of the week, the children engaged in new center activities; a Passover memory game, a counting and identifying number activity, creating a giant Sea of Reeds, all while continuing to enjoy the Palace of Shushan and other classroom materials. On Thursday, the children greatly enjoyed hearing a wonderful story from Rabbi Sari and singing Passover songs with Andrew in Music class. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Hunter and his family.
