Dear Room 13 Families,
We began our wonderful week, like we do each week, with a beautiful Havdalah service within our classroom. The children smelled the spices and watched at the light from the Havdalah candle lite up their hands. Together we said goodbye to Shabbat and welcomed in the new week. We then had the joy of creating a special art project and enjoyed a birthday treat in celebration of Isabella’s 4th birthday! In continuation of last week’s conversation on Israel and the Dead Sea, together we performed an experiment to show just how the amount of salt affects what goes into the water. We began with an egg and two vases of water; one we pretended was the Pacific Ocean, so we sprinkled a little bit of salt in it and the other we pretended was the Dead Sea, so we poured a full cup of salt in it. We hypothesized about what we thought would happen when we dropped the egg (pretending it was a rock) into our “Pacific Ocean.” The children thought it might sink, float, crack, change colors or even explode out the top! We placed the egg in the water and the children watched as the egg sank to the bottom of the vase. We then hypothesized about what might now happen into our “Dead Sea.” Again, we got a variety of thoughts, including a few that thought it might float or become covered in mud both like the people in the pictures we had seen. The children were so excited to see that this time, the egg floated! We discussed why and how this occurred and they have been keeping a close eye on our eggs since then. During our week, we also spent time revisiting self-portraits. We spent time during circle time, discussing in more depth the shapes we see on our face and the placement of facial features. Focusing on details, we noticed we have eyelashes, eyebrows and some friends even have freckles that we could add to our pictures. The children worked creating their own updated self-portraits. Throughout the rest of the week, the children experienced new materials at the Literacy center and revisited materials they had not used in a while. On Tuesday, we had the joy of visiting the Library. We want to give a big thank you to Kala and Sonny for reading us a great book while we were at the Library. On Wednesday, we measured, smushed and baked a delicious banana bread. The children also juiced grapefruit from Hannah’s tree. They loved trying both of these exciting treats. On Thursday, we sang put on a musical play with Andrew, our music teacher. Everyone played an instrument that represented a character in the song. We want to give a big Mazel Tov to Ezekiel and his family on the birth of his new baby sister, Aaliyah Rose! Ezekiel told his friends all about his new baby sister and the children were excited to create a special card for him and his family. We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Isabella and her family.
