Dear Room 13 Families,
This week was yet another wonderful and busy week here in Room 13. Starting on Monday, we began reflecting on our year together. We discussed how, at the beginning of the year, each of us came into class as an individual, one who is created in God’s Image, B’tzelem Elohim. We were and are a part of our family. However, it wasn’t until our Room 13 class was formed, that we each then became part of our Room 13 community. And what an amazing community we have built. We discussed what this means to each of us to be a part of this group; we are here to help each other, be kind to one another, learn together and even sing together. The children then realized that even though we are now a very strong class community, we are still a very important part of our family. Over the next few days, we continued this conversation and reintroduced the topic of trees and their importance to us as people and especially as Jewish people (we began this conversation back in January with the celebration of Tu Bish’vat, the birthday of the trees). We reminded ourselves of all of the important parts of a tree and then made the connection of our families growing like trees. We explained to the children that they will each get to create their very own family tree. The excitement was amazing! We then discussed what we will need to do so; bark, branches, leaves and our families! Over the next week, the children will continue to work on their very own family trees, representing the important role that they each play within your families. While all of these thoughtful conversations were going on, during center time, the children were working very hard creating their monthly self-portraits. It is truly amazing to see the drawing skills each of your children have gained over the last few months. At the Math center, they worked on number matching and, while working at the Literacy center, they worked on alphabet puzzles and letter matching. On Thursday, we had the opportunity to go and visit a Pre-K class! We discussed with the children all about how we have a very full and exciting next week and a half together and then our year together will end. We mentioned that those attending camp will see Hannah throughout the summer. We discussed how even though we have had a great year together, it’s so exciting that next year, just like last year, they will have a new classroom with new teachers and even a new yard to play in. We then went and visited Room 8, a Pre-K room. The children had the opportunity to explore the classroom, talk with the Pre-K children and even meet the teachers. We then went for a quick look at the yard (we will be able to play on it one day next week). The children were so excited about these new opportunities! Throughout our week we rode tricycles during Tricycle Express, heard a story read by Lola and her mom, sang songs with Brock during Music and listened intently while Rabbi Josh told us a wonderful story. The excitement of Israel’s birthday, which we celebrated last week, was carried throughout our week. After discussing the Dead Sea, we did an experiment for the children to have a better understanding how the salt affects our bodies. We placed an egg in a jar of colored water and watched as it sank to the bottom of the jar. We then hypothesized, with the Dead Sea in mind, what might happen if we place another egg in a jar with colored water and tons of salt. Some children thought it might sink, some thought it might float and a few even thought it might explode out of the jar. With all these “smart guesses” in mind, we slowly lowered the egg into the heavily salted water and to our excitement, the egg floated, just like our bodies would in the Dead Sea! We then ended our fabulous week by celebrating a beautiful Shabbat with Oliver and his family. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
