Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow, what a week full of joyous celebrations! With both Chen’s birthday and Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, we had a lot to do, a lot to learn and a lot to celebrate. We began our week building an understanding of the importance of the land of Israel. We discussed how we are Jewish children living in America, learning at school . . . just like the Jewish children living in Israel, also learning at school. We talked about how Israel is a very special place for us as Jewish people. Throughout the week, we continued this conversation, learning about what makes Israel so special. The children also noticed the Israeli flags all around campus and within our classroom. They noticed the blue and white and the Star of David in the middle, but why does the flag look this way, the children wondered. We learned how the Star of David comes from King David’s shield that protected him in time of need and showed the children a tallit, a prayer shawl, what one may wrap themselves with in time of prayer. When these two symbols are combined on the Israeli flag, it shows the importance of protection, safety, prayer and Judaism. We then learned the song, Kachol V’Lavan, Blue and White, emphasizing the importance of the flag, its colors and its symbols. The children then had the opportunity to create their very own Israeli flags. When the children learned that Israel would be celebrating a birthday, they were curious how a place has a birthday. Since we were also celebrating Chen’s birthday this week, it made for a wonderful comparison. To celebrate Chen’s birthday, we made her a special book, brought her flowers and enjoyed a delicious treat together, but could we do those things for Israel too? Finally, on Thursday, Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israel’s birthday, was here! We joined with the rest of the Explorers for one big birthday party. We marched with our flags, sang songs about Israel and enjoyed tasting a variety of traditional Israeli foods. Throughout the rest of the week, we enjoyed Tricycle Express, our final trip to the Library, singing songs with Brock, as well as learning and drumming to songs about Israel. We then ended our fabulous week by celebrating a beautiful Shabbat with Leah and her family. We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
