Dear Room 13 Families,
Even with this week being a shorter week, we still had a wonderful, fun-filled time together! As we welcomed everyone back, the children shared beautiful stories of how they spent their holiday time. We began our week by learning all about the importance and meaning of the Shofar. We discussed how when we hear the Shofar it wakes up our body; it reminds us to think about our actions and our new year. We looked at pictures of Rams with horns and studied a real Shofar. The children then had the opportunity to create their own Shofar. While discussing our new year, we learned all about Tashlich, a ceremony one preforms on Rosh HaShannah. We discussed the school’s value of the year, N’devut Lev, Generosity of Heart, and how we can think about this and how we can better our actions in our New Year. We also read the book, “Today Is the Birthday of the World.” Throughout the book, the animals and child are speaking with God. God asks them if they were the best they could be throughout the year. When they all answer yes, God responds by telling them that when we are the best we can be, we make the world the most wonderful, kind place for all to be a part of. The children then closed their eyes and quietly thought of what they could do just a bit better this year to make the world a wonderful place for all. They each then had a chance to throw a cracker into our “river” and share what they want to do better this year. One friend shared they want to help clean up at home and another wanted to give more hugs and kisses! We discussed how as a class community, the more we work to be generous with our hearts, the more wonderful, welcoming and kind world we will have to live in. To end our conversation, we introduced the upcoming holiday of Yom Kippur. We discussed that, again, this is a holiday all about how we think about what we can do better in our upcoming year. Throughout the rest of our week, the children enjoyed Music with Andrew, singing new holiday songs. We also began working on creating our very own Shabbat Candlesticks. Next week, the children will be bringing home their Shabbat candlesticks they created. As you celebrate at home, they will be reminded of the wonderful times had at school! We ended our week by spending a beautiful Shabbat together as a class. Each child baked their very own challah, we sand the blessings together and enjoyed our time in the Sanctuary celebrating Shabbat together.
