Dear Room 13 Families,
Wow! We can’t believe how quickly our first week of school has flown by. It has been so wonderful getting to know you and your children. We spent our first week focusing on the beauty of new beginnings. We spent time getting to know your children, giving them time to explore their new environment and helping them get to know the children in our class. We discussed how we are now forming a new Room 13 community, what that means to us and what that might feel like. We explained that our class community is like our school family and how we treat each other, as well as our new space, with kindness and respect. While focusing on new beginnings, we of course, delved into the holiday of Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year. We discussed what this particular new beginning might look and feel like. Together we learned about the traditions and their meanings of this beautiful holiday. We discussed why we often see apples, honey, pomegranates and even a Shofar at this time of year. As we held the apple in circle time, one friend called the whole apple a seed, when another called out, “No, the seed is hiding inside!” We decided to take these comments a bit further and cut open the apples to see. Since we had 3 different colored apples, the children wondered if they were all the same on the inside. We hypothesized, made a “smart guess,” about what we might see, what might be the same and what might be different. The children were thrilled to see that all the apples had seeds “hiding” on the inside, however they all had different amounts and were actually hiding them a bit differently. While thinking of new beginnings, we of course then discussed how just like we are having a lot of new beginnings, new year, new class, new friendships, the seed is its own new beginning! Throughout our week, we also enjoyed our time with Andrew, our music teacher. Each day, the children love sharing snack time together, trying new foods and socializing with their new classmates. They especially enjoyed tasting apples dipped in honey and tasting the delicious apple honey cake that we baked together! We ended our week with our first beautiful Shabbat together as a class. Each child baked their very own round challah to bring from school to home to use during your family celebrations and to celebrate their first Shabbat of the new school year. On this challah we even drizzled honey on top for the sweet, new year that lies ahead. Shabbat Shalom, Hannah and Chen Reminders: *Please remember to sign your child in and out, with a legible signature, EVERY day.
