Dear Room 13 Families, Wow, what a full, busy and exciting week have had here in Room 13, even with only 3 days this week! Since we began our week on a Wednesday, instead of beginning with Havdalah we had the joy of gathering together with Room 12 and Rabbi Sari for a wonderful “Storah Time.” Rabbi Sari shared an interactive story about the beauty of a round challah at this time of year. We also continued our discussion on the importance and meaning of the Shofar. We talked about how when we hear the Shofar it wakes up our bodies; it reminds us to think about our actions and our new year. We looked at pictures of Rams with horns and even studied a real Shofar. After noticing the colors and texture of a real Shofar, the children then had the opportunity to create their very own artistic interpretation of a Shofar. On Thursday, we joined together to sing songs with Mr. Marcos, our Music teacher. He began teaching the children about our upcoming holiday of Sukkot and sang songs all about how we build a Sukkah, what materials we may need and even how the actual structure is formed. The children played the wood blocks while singing about hammering the Sukkah materials and enjoyed marching around the room, singing and playing their instruments. Thinking back to Rosh HaShanah and these days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we began to discuss how we use this time of year to think about our actions; to think about the choices we made last year, and what we can do differently/maybe even better this year. We discussed the tradition of Tashlich, a ceremony where we symbolically throw our “not as great choices” (our sins as we say to adults) into the moving water for the waves or birds to take away and start the year off fresh and new. Each child had the opportunity to come up and say something about their year that they thought they could do better and then toss their cracker into the bucket of water (ocean). It was wonderful to hear thoughts like, “share my toys with my little sister more,” “help clean up my toys more,” and even “take turns with my friends more.” We had the joy of celebrating Abigail and Tamara’s birthdays with their family. It is always wonderful to come together as a class community to celebrate our friends! We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat! In class, we baked delicious challah, sang the blessings together and enjoyed our class community during our celebration. We then joined our Explorer and Investigator community for a wonderful Shabbat service together with Ditza and Rabbi Sari.
