Dear Room 13 Families, We began our week with a very special Tu BiSh’vat themed Havdalah. We gathered together with our Explorer/Investigator community outside under a beautiful tree we have on Wise Woods. As we began , taking a deep breath in, we were reminded that the trees help us to have the air we need to be able to do exactly what we were doing! Together we said good bye to Shabbat and welcome in our new, joyous week. As we wished one another a Shavuah Tov, we moved right into our Tu BiSh’vat community celebration. We discussed how the tree we had been praying under did not have such a beautiful space to be in. We wondered how we could change that. The children quickly suggested creating a more garden like feel, and many, remembering the rocks we had decorated last week, suggested we place them in that spot as well. We then got right to work. The children worked together to spread new soil, carefully place the rocks and even dig holes and plant small succulents. If you have not yet seen our beautiful new garden, please ask your child to show you the new garden space on Wise Woods! To continue our holiday celebrations within our classroom, the children tasted a number of different fruits that we find on trees and vines. We talked about each one, tasting them in fresh and dried form and then even made our very own raisins from our fresh grapes! After hypothesizing what they thought would happen when we put grapes in the oven, the children were shocked to see the raisins appear. Throughout our week, the children also continued to work on their tree ramps; needing to theorize and test them out with each added step. By adding the branches to the trunk and roots, they thought about how they must place them so the seed can continue on its path. Then by adding flowers and leaves to the branches, the children wondered how, if any, does it change the seeds path. As each child is working so diligently, we will continue to work on our tree ramps throughout next week as well! Through our time exploring balls and ramps, we have had a number of conversations on teamwork and showing kindness to others. Throughout our week, we explored this topic more and more, reading books such as “What does it mean to be kind?” We discussed how we can show kindness towards others in our very own class community and what that may look like, feel like, etc. We talked about what type of words are kind words and what words might hurt others feelings. We also introduced the Golden Rule, treat others as you want to be treated. With Thursday being Red, White and Blue Dress up day, we of course discussed why this was. We learned about President’s Day and how it began as a celebration of George Washington’s birthday and how now we often celebrate our first few Presidents and the important roles they played in our country. We looked at the American Flag and the children immediately saw the colors were red, white and blue, just like they were wearing! We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat service and celebration. We had the pleasure of celebrating with our Room 13 community.
