Dear Room 13 Families,
This week was filled with light, love, joy and of course, Hanukkah! We began our week with a beautiful All-School Havdalah. We joined together as a community to say goodbye to Shabbat, welcome in the new week and celebrate Hanukkah together. After celebrating Havdalah, we lit the Hanukiyah together, sang the blessings and enjoying a mini Hanukkah song session. It was such a wonderful way to begin our week! Throughout our week our class, of course, was filled with Hanukkah joy, songs, stories and blessings. The children greatly enjoyed helping to tell the story of Hanukkah, now that they have heard it a number of times. They loved singing all our of Hanukkah songs and were so excited to teach them to each of you. We read a number of Hanukkah books, some just fun and silly, while others were teaching us more about the story and our Hanukkah traditions. Each day, we lit the Hanukkah candles, singing the blessing and admiring the beautiful light that glows from the Hanukiyah. We worked hard on a number of different Hanukkah inspired Art work; painting dreidels, decorating candles for our Hanukkah necklaces and even created our very own Hanukkah snow globes! On Wednesday, we performed a Hanukkah science experiment, mixing water and oil together to see what will happen and then adding a dreidel to see if and where it will float within the jar. The children were enthralled by the experiment and provided a number of thoughtful hypothesis throughout. On Tuesday, we enjoyed spending time in the school Library. Thank you so much to Preston and Sanam and Lilly and Hoda for reading wonderful stories to our class. The children had the amazing opportunity to hear a new Hanukkah story read by the Author/Illustrator! Anne-Marie Baila Asner, creator of Matzah Ball Books, joined the Explorer classes to read, “Hanukkah with Noshy Boy and Friends;” a book about the story of Hanukkah, while teaching Yiddush words through the characters names and actions. The children were so excited to see that she gave a copy to our class to read again and book marks to take home. It was so wonderful celebrating this joyous holiday with so many of you! Thank you all for making our Hanukkah party so incredibly special and delicious. The children had such a great time celebrating, singing, eating and lighting the candles with all of you. Thank you! We ended our week with a beautiful Shabbat celebration with Kayla and her family. On this very special Shabbat during Hanukkah, we decided that, instead of making challah, we would make sufganiot, jelly donuts, for Hanukkah. The children had a wonderful rolling the dough into balls and then filling the inside with jelly! It was a wonderful Shabbat Hanukkah treat!
